What is annealing of 3D prints?

Annealing = heat treatment of a 3D print. We heat the print to a temperature just below Tg for a few hours. Result: 2-10× higher strength.

Why annealing

3D print has amorphous crystals of plastic. Annealing enables recrystallization - plastic arranges into stronger structure.

Temperatures and times

  • PLA: 80-100 °C, 1-2 h
  • PETG: 80-100 °C, 2-3 h
  • Nylon: 80-120 °C, 3-6 h
  • PC: 130-150 °C, 4-8 h
