Spectrum LW - PLA UltraFoam TRAFFIC is an innovative foaming PLA filament with active material expansion, enabling more than a 3x reduction in the weight of printed parts while maintaining strength and high-quality surface finish.

Key features

The material is based on the proven Spectrum Premium PLA, enriched with foaming components that activate when the nozzle is heated above 220 °C. Maximum foaming effect is achieved within the 240-250 °C range, where the material volume expands more than 3x. The resulting density of the printed part drops to approximately 0.40 g/cm³, making this filament one of the lightest materials available for FDM printing.

Below 220 °C, the filament behaves like standard PLA and provides full printing properties without expansion. The level of foaming can be controlled by nozzle temperature and material flow, allowing flow to be reduced by up to 70%. As a result, a single spool covers a print volume comparable to approximately three spools of standard PLA.

The matte surface of the parts effectively hides layer lines and gives prints a professional appearance. With greater expansion, the filament shade may visually lighten.

Who is Spectrum LW - PLA UltraFoam TRAFFIC suitable for

LW-PLA UltraFoam is designed for applications where every gram of weight matters. Typical uses include RC modelling, drone and UAV building, aircraft models and other aerodynamic structures. It is also suitable for producing lightweight functional prototypes, costume accessories (cosplay), props, helmets, and large-area prints where standard PLA would be too heavy. Thanks to its matte surface, it is also well-suited for visible parts and design models.

For projects requiring higher thermal resistance, it is better to opt for PETG or ASA.

Usage tips

  • Before setting print parameters, run a temperature tower in the 210-250 °C range and find the optimal expansion point for your hotend.
  • For maximum foaming, reduce flow to 40-50% and print at 240-250 °C.
  • A hardened nozzle is recommended - the foaming filament contains active components that may slightly wear brass nozzles.
  • Set retraction to lower values (2-3 mm for Bowden, 0.8-1.5 mm for Direct Drive) to prevent nozzle clogging from foamed material.
  • Single-perimeter printing with a higher layer height speeds up printing and maximises material savings.
  • The filament is sensitive to moisture - we recommend drying it in a filament dryer at 45 °C for at least 6 hours before printing.
  • Bed adhesion is ensured by a standard PEI sheet, glass with adhesive, or a magnetic print bed.
