What is Z-offset and how to set it?
Z-offset is the vertical distance between the nozzle and the build plate during the first layer. Correctly set Z-offset is key to first layer adhesion and overall print quality.
Why it's important
When Z-offset is too large, the nozzle spits filament into the air - won't stick to the plate. When too small, the nozzle presses into the plate (elephant foot, clogged nozzle). Ideal: thickness of a paper sheet (~0.1 mm).
Manual setup
- Run homing (G28)
- Move head to plate center
- Lower Z by 0.05 mm until it grips paper
- Adjust Z-offset and save
- Verify with first layer test
Automatic calibration
Modern printers (Bambu Lab, Creality K-series, Snapmaker) auto-calibrate Z-offset - using a sensor (BLTouch, inductive, piezo).
