What is warping and how to prevent it?
Warping is the curling of corners of a 3D print upward from the build plate. Caused by plastic shrinkage during cooling. Most common with ABS and ASA, less with PLA.
Why it occurs
When plastic cools, it reduces volume (thermal contraction). Large flat areas in the middle cool slower than edges - corners contract and lift. Higher print temperature = more warping.
How to prevent
- Higher bed temperature
- Brim or raft - increase contact
- Enclosure - stable temperature
- Clean plate - IPA, no fingers
- Adhesive - glue stick, 3DLac, Magigoo
What to do when it happens
Stop the print, remove the part. Reprinting with same settings ends the same. Raise bed temp, add brim, verify cleanliness.
