What is a build plate?
A build plate is the surface on which the 3D printer lays the first layer of the model. Most commonly used are PEI sheets (textured or smooth), steel plates, glass or magnetic foil.
Build plate types
- PEI (textured) - excellent adhesion, no glue needed
- PEI (smooth) - mirror-smooth bottom of print
- Glass - flat prints, but fragile
- Magnetic foil + steel plate - flex and part pops off
Maintenance
Wipe with IPA 90%+ before each print. Fingerprints contain grease that worsens adhesion.
Why models don't stick
Dirty plate, wrong Z-offset, low temperature, worn surface, drafts.
