What is an STL file?

STL (Standard Triangle Language) is the most widespread format for 3D models intended for printing. It describes the model as a triangle mesh. Every slicer opens STL files - it's the de-facto standard in 3D printing.

What STL contains

STL file contains only geometry - triangle mesh describing the model surface. No colors, textures, materials or metadata. For color printing use 3MF format.

Where to download models

  • MakerWorld - Bambu Lab catalog, quality models
  • Printables.com - Prusa community
  • Thingiverse - older, rich archive
  • Cults3D, Thangs - alternatives

STL vs. OBJ, 3MF, STEP

  • STL - geometry only, most widespread
  • OBJ - with textures
  • 3MF - modern, with colors and metadata
  • STEP - CAD format
