What is the STEP format?
STEP (Standard for the Exchange of Product Data, .stp) is a CAD format. Contains a mathematical description of the model (not triangles), it can be edited in CAD (Fusion 360, SolidWorks).
STEP vs. STL
STL = triangle mesh, can't be edited. STEP = parametric model, you can change dimensions, add holes, modify.
For 3D printing
You can't print STEP directly - must export to STL/3MF in CAD first.
