What is shrinkage in 3D printing?

Shrinkage is the reduction of model size during cooling of plastic after printing. Different materials shrink differently - PLA ~0.4 %, PETG ~0.8 %, ABS ~1.5 %, Nylon up to 2 %.

Impact on dimensions

A 100 mm ABS model will be ~98.5 mm after cooling. For precise parts shrinkage compensation is needed.

Calibration

Print a 100 mm test cube, measure after cooling (24 hours).
