What is retraction?

Retraction is the backward pulling of filament in the extruder during non-print movement. Prevents stringing - fine threads between model parts.

How it works

When the printer travels through empty space, the extruder pulls filament back by a few mm. This creates negative pressure in the nozzle - plastic doesn't leak, doesn't trail behind the head.

Settings

  • Direct drive: 0.5-2 mm
  • Bowden: 3-8 mm (longer path)
  • Speed: 30-60 mm/s
  • PLA: standard
  • PETG: less (else stringing in hotend)
  • TPU: minimal or off
