What is PVA filament?
PVA (Polyvinyl Alcohol) is a water-soluble filament used as support. After printing you dip the part in water and PVA dissolves. Requires a dual extruder.
When to choose PVA
Ideal for complex models with internal cavities where traditional support couldn't be broken off. After dissolving in water only the clean model remains.
Limitations
- Dual extruder printer required
- Hygroscopic - must be dried
- Dissolving takes hours
- Expensive vs regular supports
- Works only with PLA (can't withstand high temperatures)
Alternatives
HIPS dissolves in limonene (for ABS). BVOH is a pricier PVA alternative with higher heat resistance.
