What is the OBJ format?

OBJ (Wavefront Object) is a 3D format with texture and color support. Compared to STL it contains UV mapping, materials (MTL). For color 3D printing.

OBJ vs. STL

  • STL: just triangle geometry
  • OBJ: geometry + textures + colors + materials
  • 3MF: modern, compressed, multiple objects

When to use

Primarily for rendering and 3D graphics. For 3D printing OBJ is less common.
