What is a nozzle in 3D printing?

A nozzle is the metal part at the end of the hotend through which the melted filament flows. Nozzle diameter (most commonly 0.4 mm) determines the printed line width and significantly affects printing speed and detail.

Nozzle role

The nozzle is the last point where filament changes form - from a solid string to a liquid layer on the build plate. Print quality depends on even flow, clean nozzle and correct diameter.

Nozzle diameters

  • 0.2 mm - maximum detail, slow
  • 0.4 mm - standard, good compromise
  • 0.6 mm - faster print, less detail
  • 0.8 mm+ - large parts, fast print

Nozzle materials

  • Brass - standard, cheap. Wears with abrasive filaments.
  • Hardened steel - for abrasive filaments (carbon, glow).
  • Ruby / sapphire - premium, extremely durable.
