What is microstepping?

Microstepping is the division of one motor step into smaller parts. A standard stepper has 200 steps/rev, with 16x microstepping it's 3200.

Typical values

  • 1x (full step) - coarse, noisy
  • 16x - Marlin standard
  • 256x - TMC driver interpolation

Effect on accuracy

Microstepping doesn't increase accuracy, but smooths motion - less vibration, quieter printing.
