What is a hotend in a 3D printer?

A hotend is the printer's heating module where the filament melts before being extruded through the nozzle. Contains heater block, heatbreak, heatsink and nozzle.

Components

  • Heater block - brass/aluminum heating part
  • Heater cartridge - 40 W heating element
  • Thermistor - temperature measurement
  • Heatbreak - separates hot and cold zones
  • Heatsink - cooler
  • Nozzle

All-metal vs. PTFE

All-metal hotend handles high temperatures (300+ °C) - for ABS, PC, PEEK. PTFE-lined cheaper, max 240-250 °C (PTFE degrades).
