What is a heatbreak in a hotend?

A heatbreak is a thin metal tube in the hotend that separates hot and cold zones. Prevents filament from melting in the cold-end before the extruder.

Why heatbreak

Without heatbreak, heat spreads from the heater block throughout the hotend tube. Filament would melt before the extruder - clogged nozzle, heat creep. Heatbreak interrupts heat flow.

Materials

  • Stainless steel - standard, cheap
  • Titanium - better insulation, for high-temp
  • Bimetal (copper + steel) - premium, best thermal isolation
