What is G-code?
G-code is the instruction language by which the slicer tells the 3D printer where to move the print head, how much filament to extrude and at what speed. Each printer movement is one line of G-code.
File structure
G-code is a text file with commands one per line. Has header (temperatures, homing), body (print commands) and footer (heater off). Any text editor opens it.
Common commands
- G0 / G1 X Y Z - head movement
- G28 - homing
- M104 S220 - nozzle temp 220 °C
- M140 S60 - bed temp
- M109 / M190 - wait for temp
Why learn G-code
G-code knowledge helps: pause for filament change (M600), modify start script, diagnose print problems.
