What is a filament dryer?

A filament dryer is a box with heater, fan and thermometer. Removes moisture from filament, which causes cracking and poor print quality.

Why dry

Filaments are hygroscopic - absorb moisture from air. Wet filament: crackles when printing, poor layer adhesion, porous prints. Nylon, PC, TPU absorb moisture in hours. PLA and PETG in days/weeks.

How long to dry

  • PLA: 4-6 h at 50 °C
  • PETG: 4-8 h at 65 °C
  • ABS/ASA: 6-8 h at 70 °C
  • Nylon/PC: 8-12 h at 80 °C
  • TPU: 4-6 h at 50 °C
