What is an extruder in a 3D printer?

An extruder is the mechanism that pushes filament into the 3D printer's hotend. Contains a stepper motor and toothed gears that precisely feed filament at the speed and pressure needed for quality printing.

How the extruder works

Extruder has three main components: stepper motor (drives feeding), toothed gears (grip filament) and tensioning mechanism. Filament amount is controlled by G-code via E-step calibration.

Direct drive vs. Bowden

  • Direct drive - extruder directly above nozzle. Better for flexible filaments (TPU), more precise retraction. Disadvantage: heavier head.
  • Bowden - extruder outside the head, filament travels through a tube. Lighter head = faster printing, but worse with flexibles.

Common problems

Grinding - gears strip filament. Clicking - motor skips steps (clogged nozzle). Under-extrusion - too little filament.
