What is elephant foot in 3D printing?

Elephant foot is the widening of the bottom layers of the model - the part has „feet" at the plate. Caused by too low Z-offset or high bed temperature.

How to fix

  • Raise Z-offset by 0.05 mm
  • Lower bed temperature by 5-10 °C (after first layer)
  • Enable elephant foot compensation in slicer (0.1-0.3 mm)
  • Raft - eliminates contact with hot bed

Prevention

Bambu Lab and Orca have automatic compensation. In Cura it's „First Layer Horizontal Expansion" with negative value.
