What is bridging in 3D printing?
Bridging is the printing of a flat segment over empty space without supports. The printer extrudes filament across the gap - with strong cooling and correct speed it works even without supports.
How it works
The nozzle pulls filament from one side to the other. Cooling instantly solidifies the strand. Short bridging (up to 5 cm) is handled by almost any printer. Longer bridges need speed, cold air and the right material.
Settings
- Cooling: 100 %
- Speed: 20-40 mm/s
- Temperature: lower end of material range
- Flow: 80-95 %
- Material: PLA best
When to use supports instead
Bridges longer than 5-8 cm, heavy materials (PETG, ABS), smooth bottom needed - choose support.
