What is backlash in a 3D printer?

Backlash is mechanical play in the transmission. When the motor changes direction, it spins through the play briefly before moving the actual part. Leads to inaccurate corners.

Where it occurs

  • Loose belts - main cause
  • Worn pulleys
  • Play in linear bearings

Solution

Tighten belts, replace worn pulleys, check linear rails.
