What is ABS filament?

ABS (Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene) is a classic engineering plastic for 3D printing. Advantage: high heat resistance (up to ~90 °C). Disadvantage: it smells and requires an enclosure.

Properties and use

ABS is a plastic used for decades - Lego, car parts, electronics. In 3D printing we value its heat resistance (softens at ~95 °C) and good toughness. Good for car parts, outdoor in sun (with UV coating) and mechanically stressed applications.

Printing parameters

  • Nozzle: 240-260 °C
  • Bed: 100-110 °C
  • Cooling: 0-30 %
  • Enclosure: Required
  • Speed: 40-60 mm/s

ABS vs. ASA

ASA has similar properties to ABS but better UV resistance - more suitable for outdoor parts. ABS is cheaper, ASA more durable outdoors.
